Sharon Courtney, Senior County Player, gave a talk to club members on the nutrition and hydration in the meeting room last night (20th). The room was full of players parents and interested individuals. A measure of the quality of any talk is can be judged in the number of question asked from the floor as the talk goes on and last night saw huge audience involvement. Sharon put forward the idea of keeping food simple, planing what to eat and when and not reacting to hunger but managing it. Sharon talked about the updated food pyrimidine, taking it layer by layer and explains the benefits and pitfalls of each food group. It fair to say that there was noting revolutionary in Sharon’s slides but that’s the point. We know what we should do at meal time but putting that into practice is the challange. The talk told of how not eating can cause the body to, as Sharon put it ” hug and hold on to” the next meal it gets as it not sure when more food will come.
Two points that have suck with me in particular are
1). Eat a meal or a healthy snack every 3 hours and
2).Don’t go to bed hungry.
Maybe others took something else from the evening, there were many useful points to choose from. I think the slide (pictured) is sage advise for our younger players preparing for sport
