LGFA U18 Monaghan On Saturday last the Monaghan Ladies Gaelic U18 girls team commenced their Ulster championship with an away fixture against Armagh in Silverhill. Couch to 5K In Kilmore Training grounds there is a Couch to 5K programme commencing this Sunday 16th February at 10:00am. This is open to all the community, men, women and kids and costs just €2 per week. The programme lasts for 8 weeks and is part of the Gaelic 4 Mothers and Others initiative. Health and Wellbeing Scotstown GAA will continue in 2025 with its Healthy Club project which aims to help GAA clubs explore how they support the holistic health of their members and the communities they serve. During 2024 we continued the Make a Ceili initiative which was launched before Christmas. In January / February saw the start of the Operation Transformation walk, the Scotstown Ladies hosted a Women’s Health talk, a drugs and Alcohol awareness workshop with our coaches, and we had several card nights during the first quarter. During May we had the Hello How are you? Campaign and in August, a community event after the Blessing of the Graves. In November we had daffodil planting in Kilmore and in November we had the return of the card nights for the winter. In January / February we had a charity fun / walk which took place on St. Brigid’s weekend. Charity Fun Run / Walk for the Dillon Quirke Foundation On the St. Brigid’s Bank holiday Monday last, Scotstown GAA Health and Wellbeing committee organised a Charity Fun Run / Walk in aid of the Dillon Quirke foundation. Thanks to our Health and Well-being officer Abbie McCarey for the following brilliant report. "On Monday last, Scotstown health and well being committee hosted a friendly walk/run in Scotstown GAA complex followed by tea, chats and homemade goodies. Thanks to all our bakers, supporters, volunteers on the day and whoever else contributed to make the event welcoming and successful. The event was run to raise money for the Dillion Quirke foundation. This foundation provided heart screening for over 90 pre teens and teens last year from 12-18 year olds within the club. It was an excellent service of which we at Scotstown GAA are very grateful. More details to follow for those of you unable to attend last weeks walk, but would still like to contribute!" Card Playing night this Friday February 14th Scotstown GAA are inviting everyone to come along and play Cards in the Scotstown complex on Friday 14th February at 8pm especially young people who want to learn the game of 45, there will be card players there on the night to guide and help, fun night ahead don’t let our traditional card games become a thing of the past. Mackie Rooney Book Launch – This Friday 14th February – Scotstown Complex 8pm A Book for the Ages - Book-Launch at Scotstown Now that Storm Eowyn has passed we can look forward to getting out and about again and what better event to bring people together than a book-launch. And this sense of occasion will surely electrify those attending the Scotstown Sports Complex at 8 pm on Friday 14th (Feb.) The keenly-awaited A Sliabh Beagh and North-Monaghan Miscellany has been safely delivered after a long gestation, but the wait has been most certainly worthwhile. The author, Scotstown-man Mackie Rooney, has spent half a lifetime immersed in the folklore and local history of his native parish of Tydavnet and Sliabh Beagh. His modus operandi was simplicity itself-interviewing elderly people and researching the archives of regional newspapers. Small wonder that the final product is a three-volume (1100 pages) ‘book for the ages’ which will ensure that the struggles, but also the lighter moments, of day-to-day life for our ancestors is not forgotten in this digital age. Teeming with at least 150 topics from the naming of Sliabh Beagh to recent sporting events, we journey through the folklore of The Early Christian Period and Penal Times to the more documented history of the 19thand 20thcenturies-The Famine, The Fenians, Evictions and The Struggle for the Land, The War of Independence, The Establishment of the Border, Smuggling and the 1955-1962 Border Campaign. The book touches and deals sensitively with some controversial events which still rankle in the community. Not surprisingly, he gave a wide berth to some of these events but left the door ajar with ‘A Future Project’ on what could be revisited at another time. His interviews over many years with the elderly throw added light on the major events of the twentieth century. The many poems and photos add lustre to this insight. Rooney is to be lauded in what was for him a labour of love. He appreciates that to know ourselves we must know our past. And yet, if we hope to move on, we cannot be shackled by the past. A Sliabh Beagh and North-Monaghan Miscellany abounds in folklore which was quite common to an Ireland of former times-a belief in fairies, ghosts, banshees, and superstitions of a malign nature. However, the author has tossed in so many humorous pieces that we can feel assured that he, at least, is not in thrall, to this past, while yet shining a light on the lives of our ancestors.
