Scotstown GAA Minor Girls Champions! Division 2 Cup Final: Scotstown 3-7 Magheracloone 1-8
After what was an uplifting and reassuring year for the minor girls, their hard efforts were rewarded on Sunday 27th of September when they overcame Magheracloone in the Minor D2 Championship Final in Cremartin. Girls minor football in Scotstown has struggled over the last number of years so it is encouraging to see the groundwork finally pay off and inspire other girls to play football for longer.
Scotstown faced Magheracloone a team who they narrowly lost out to in the games leading up to the final which left for an exciting, competitive final. A strong Scotstown team lined out to take on the experienced side. Scotstown started strong with two excellent scores from play with Donna Sherlock and Alannah Corrigan putting Scotstown on the scoreboard. A defensive opening half kept the scores relatively low with both teams fighting hard to push off any major attacks. Scotstown goalkeeper Katie Sherlock showed great courage in pulling off some brilliant saves, keeping the girls in the game. Continued pressure was put on the Scotstown defense with Ciara Murray holding the full backline strongly and minimised attack on goal. Magheracloone edged 3 points ahead at half time leaving Scotstown in need of some inspiration for the second half.
Alannah Corrigan opened the scoreline in the second half but unfortunately was followed by a Magheracloone point and goal. Trailing now by 6 points, Scotstown needed to spark some refreshed energy into the team with Ella McKenna entering the game and earning herself a goal just minutes after coming on. With the sides level the battle continued with Scotstown earning themselves another point. Katie Sherlock faced pressure when Magheracloone were awarded a penalty. A fantastic save by Katie, gave the girls a boost of confidence seeing captain Aimee McGuirk grab herself a point.
Scostown finished strongly with a 5 point win, crowning themselves county champions.
Final Score; Scotstown 3-7 Magheracloone 1-8
A massive well done to all the girls for their hard fought victory and all their commitment to training throughout the year. A special thanks to the management team: Colm Beggan, Peader Sherry and Aoife McCarvill.
