Scotstown GAA Club Notes 25/08/2020

Scotstown GAA Club Notes. 28/07/2020

Senior Football Championship Round 1 Result - Scotstown 0-17 Truagh 1-12
After a long break our senior men returned to action this weekend following the lifting of the COVID-19 lockdown restrictions. Social distancing, hand hygiene and player and supporter welfare were at the forefront of the meeting of Scotstown Senior men and Truagh Gaels. In compliance with public health and government guidance our numbers of attendees were dramatically reduced, for this usually full house local derby meeting. A large effort was placed in putting together a live stream for supporters far and near to watch the game in the comfort and safety of their own homes. Hats off to Gareth, Mark and Frankie for the work in getting the games on TV in such a professional manner and putting this fantastic and high-quality live stream in place. Many thanks also to all our volunteers involved in us hosting the 2 championship games over the weekend safely and adhering to the Covid 19 guidelines.

A wet and gloomy Saturday evening was forecasted for the start time of the Greenfield Foods Senior Football championship but turn game time, the sun broke through. We had three senior debuts on the starting panel, Matthew Maguire, Micheal Meehan and Gavin McPhillips. Truagh were first on the scoreboard with an immediate score from play. Marking his debut with an opening score for Scotstown was Matthew Maguire with an effortless score from play. Rory Beggan was next on the scoreboard converting a 40 metre free. Conor McCarthy followed with an off the side of the boot point from play. Great efforts were made in the middle of the pitch where Scotstown dispossessed a Truagh kick out which was followed by a stunning ball played in by Donal Morgan and won by Matthew Maguire, popping it over the bar for his second score of the day.

Darren Hughes was dispossessed in the Scotstown forward line by Truagh within the scoring zone for Shane Carey to kick it over the bar for his first score of the day. Truagh replied with a point from play. A poor, quick kick out by Scotstown saw the ball delivered to the hands of Truagh’s Chrissy McAnenly and he immediately attacked and punished with a goal. An action filled first 10 minutes left the scoreline at Scotstown 0.05 Truagh 1.02. Truagh were first to enter the referee’s black book with a yellow card award to John McCarron. Some nice play was played by Scotstown and Gavin McPhillips added to the scoreline with his debut score from play.

The second yellow card of the day was awarded to Traugh number 6, Cormac McKenna. At the 20 minute mark Jamie McCarey replaced James Hamill. Truagh were awarded a free which was converted to a score. Scotstown showed great defence and worked the ball out strongly from the backline, delivering the ball to Seanie Mohan who replied with a fantastic long range shot from play. Seanie Mohan was awarded a free kick and Truagh received their 3rd yellow of the day. Conor McCarthy converted the free, marking his 2nd score. Scoreline at half time stood at Scotstown 0.09 Traugh 1.05.

Opening the score of the second half was Conor McCarthy with a 20 metre free, deservedly awarded to Matthew Maguire. 6 minutes into the second half seen Seanie Mohan being replaced by Ross McKenna. Darren Hughes made a great strong attack from the midfield mark, driving hard at the Truagh defence only to be synically dragged down by Truagh number 3, Niall McQuillan. The referee awarded a black card for his offence, which ended his game time. Conor McCarthy converted the foul to a score.

Shane Carey was on the scoreline again, pointing another free for Scotstown. Truagh replied with a well worked score from play. Some great Scotstown play finished with a nice play back by Jamie McCarey to Matthew Maguire who attacked at speed, laying it off to Paul Sherlock who popped it over the bar. Both teams replied with scores leaving the game neck and neck with 15 minutes to go. Brilliant play was seen by Scotstown as they worked to get a much needed goal, however Darren Hughes efforts were denied by the Truagh goalkeeper Caolan McGee. Truagh replied with another score from play.

At 22 minutes into the second half, Kieran Hughes replaced Gavin McPhillips and Francis Maguire replaced Matthew Maguire. Not long after taking to the field, Kieran Hughes and Truagh’s number 3 Niall McQuillan both received yellow cards. His second yellow of the day seen Niall McQuillan sent to the dugout. With 5 minutes to go, Ryan O’Toole put the sides level. A fantastic shot by Conor McCarthy seen his efforts converted with just 3 minutes to go, putting Scotstown ahead. Bouncing back with the final score of the day was Shane Carey with a free kick. An exhilarating game seen Scotstown kick start their Championship campaign with a win.

Final score Scotstown 0.17 Truagh 1.12.

Next up for the Seniors is Latton away this Sunday 2nd August at 5pm.

GAA Revised ‘Safe Return to Gaelic Games’ Guidance and our continuing community help
Phase 4 of the Government’s Reopening the country’s roadmap has been postponed from July 20th to Monday August 10th. This would have seen more restrictions eased. The GAA had issued a revised statement regarding its own guidelines of reopening for us, which are already in effect. This included for pitches to reopen for training and competitive football only. This is on the understanding that players and all participants have completed the eLearning module and are following the control measures in place (health questionnaire etc) and is on the basis of a maximum of 15 players in a designated area of the field. For games a maximum of 200 in attendance including players, officials, backroom staff, media etc.

Please note that our GAA indoor facilities including dressing rooms, club shop, social club, gyms etc. will remained CLOSED until further notice. This is in accordance with the GAA's Covid Advisory Group's guidelines. Whenever we are given the guidelines to enable us to give definitive dates of resumption of any of our activities and facilities, we will update you here and on our Clubforce app. Thanks for your patience and understanding.

We would also like to continue and reinforce our message that we are here to help. Scotstown GAA would like to reassure those in our community that we are still here to help, even as we slowly unwind this notice here. Football is nothing without its people and the community past and future.

Please continue to follow the HSE and government guidelines which are frequently posted. We would also like to praise and thank the front-line staff in the services during this time and all the goodwill that is happening in our community. Thanks everyone for abiding by the latest staying safe, washing hands and social distancing guidelines and for being patient during this time. Many thanks to all our volunteers involved.
