An Bhoth GAA Club Notes. 20/12/2022 Nollaig Shona agus Athbhliain faoi Mhaise Daoibh!
We wish all our members, players, volunteers, patrons and our community a very Happy Christmas and a peaceful and prosperous New Year. Well done to everyone involved in our activities and events during 2022, which was one of our most successful years particularly in juvenile level. These times have been one of the most difficult years in living memory with the Covid 19 pandemic and its aftermath. Thanks to everyone involved to help others in need in our parish and to raise our spirits during these times. Thanks everyone for all your support and work throughout the year and here’s to a successful 2023.
Ulster Minor Club Football Tournament Quarter Final result – Scotstown 1-9 Donaghmore 1-12
The Scotstown Minors played Donaghmore GAA in the Ulster Minor Club St Paul’s Tournament on Saturday last in Colaiste Feirste, Belfast. Hard luck to our minor Blues and management who narrowly lost the game. The lads played magnificently and lost to a strong Donaghmore side. However they had an amazing season where collectively the teams won all 4 county trophies and well done to the teams and management on all the success. Congratulations to Donaghmore GAA and all the best in their semi-final. Thanks to St Pauls GAA for superbly organising and hosting the tournament and thanks to Colaiste Feirste for superbly hosting the quarter final game. Many thanks to the tremendous support and turnout by our Blues fans, you did our club proud as well as the minor team and management. We wish Sahil Arya a speedy recovery. Thanks to Brian McKee from the Saffron Gael for the following match report.
Both teams brought a large crowd of travelling supporters to Colaiste Feirste on a cold Saturday evening. They witnessed an entertaining game that saw Domhnach Mór achieve a three point win over An Bhoth, Scotstown in a close encounter that came alive in the second half.
Despite opening pressure from Donaghmore, it was the lads from Scotstown who took an early lead through a point from Sean Og McElwain. A subsequent promising attack from Scotstown was cut out by Donaghmore keeper Cormac Draine, and his quick thinking led to a counter attack by Donaghmore with an opening point from Ronan Molloy. Further points from Noah Grimes and Aodhan Molloy pushed the Tyrone boys ahead. While Donaghmore were dominating the opening 20 minutes, Scotstown came back strongly with three points from Sean Og McElwain. The first half came to a close with both sides adding on a point apiece to leave the score at 1-5 to 0-5 as the lads headed to the welcome warmth of the changing rooms.
The second half began with both sides missing good opportunities to add to their scores, but on the sixth minute Tommy Mallon slotted over the first of two consecutive points to start putting what became increasing pressure on Scotstown. Noah Grimes added a point for Donaghmore but a goal from Adam Monahan saw the Scotstown team regain the lead.
Grimes (Donaghmore) brought the sides level with a further point in a game in which both sides pressed hard for supremacy. McElwain (Scotstown) and Clarke (Donaghmore) exchanged points as the temperature rose in an increasingly tense game. Monahan added a further point for Scotstown but it was the ever dangerous Grimes who established superiority for the lads from Donaghmore with four further points that saw them into the semi-final against Four Masters on St Stephen’s Day.

Cairde Na Botha is one of the biggest projects ever undertaken by our club. Be part of it! Scotstown GAA’s success has always been built on the considerable support we receive from home and abroad. We fondly remember fundraising projects in the past, such as the Scotstown Carnival in the 1960s to the purchase of our main field at Urbleshanny,
The Lord Mayor Campaign in the 1980s to fund the building of Sportlann Mhuire (the complex) and development of St. Marys Park and indeed, the ambitious purchase Of Kilmore in 1995 which has contributed to the outstanding success we achieve today.
Cairde na Botha is your opportunity to help your club continue this successful development for this generation and the next into the future. Fully paid up Members of Cairde Na Botha will have the benefit of their name engraved on the supporters’ wall at the Kilmore training grounds.

Health and Wellbeing
With the clock gone back an hour and the dark evenings and winter setting in, this is the time of year for the “Make your Céili” community initiative which combats loneliness and rural isolation. This has been a successful initiative aimed at encouraging people to visit a neighbour who may be lonely or suffering from rural isolation. So please over the next few months call in on people who may be suffering from loneliness, and please keep in mind the ongoing Covid 19 pandemic and take the necessary precautions. For those who are still nervous of physical visits given the ongoing Pandemic, we can still make contact with those we care about and / or are cocooning, living alone or vulnerable. They would really appreciate a phone call, letter or card just to say "I'm thinking about you, keep safe and stay strong." So please, Make a Ceili, Phone a Ceili, write a Letter, send a Card and keep in touch over the winter months and we are always here to help in anyway.
As well as our physical health, our emotional wellbeing and mental health is also highly important. In these current circumstances, it is important to remember that the community supports and services are still operating. Your GP is your first point of contact in relation to both physical and mental health needs. If you, or someone you know is in crisis, contact your GP or Doc on Call on 1850 777 911, or if you are really concerned go to the Emergency Department in Cavan General Hospital. Please see our social media platforms for Local Support and Services available with contact details.
