An Bhoth GAA Club Notes. 29/11/2022
We bid farewell to Seán
It is with deep sadness and our sincerest sympathies that we observe the passing of our former manager and honorary club member Seán McCague. In his renowned, and long illustrious career, Seán was the first Monaghan man to take up the position of GAA President from 2000 to 2003 and played a key role in securing funding for the redevelopment of Croke Park.
Seán was a lifelong member and supporter of our club and he managed the Scotstown GAA senior team to the Monaghan Championship in 1974 to end a 13-year wait for the title and three years later he was in charge of the Monaghan GAA County Senior team. In 1979 he guided the County team to win the Ulster Senior Championship for the first time in 41 years. In 1985 another Anglo Celt title and a National League crown was achieved under Sean’s management, the only time Monaghan won the National League title. That same year Monaghan went on to come very close to a huge upset in the All-Ireland semi-final by drawing with Mick O’Dwyer’s Kerry but they lost the replay.
Sean followed up in 1988 with his 3rd Ulster Senior Championship win as manager of the Monaghan County team. Sean, who also acted as a referee, was Ireland assistant manager to Eugene McGee for the International Rules series meetings in 1987 and 1990. He served as Monaghan secretary and Ulster Council delegate for his county, while he was also an influential chairman of the old Games Administration Committee during Peter Quinn's presidency.
Sean was also instrumental in acquiring Kilmore in the 1990s and the driving force behind the Scotstown Complex during the 1980s. He was the former Principal of Urbleshanny in Scotstown and Scoil Mhuire in Monaghan, Sean was always at the helm of our association both locally at club and county level, and nationally, and will be sadly missed by all of us.
We would like to pass on our sincerest sympathy and deepest condolences to his wife Bernie, daughters Paula (Keith Mc Gonnell), Nuala (Declan Symth), Martha (Colm Mac Cinna), Freda and Emma (Colm Flanagan), grandchildren Cian, Tiarnán, Aideen, Aoife, Jarlath, Briana, Trea, Seán, Aifric, Diarmuid, Conor and Nessa, sisters, Margaret Mary (Mangan), Rosemary (Manley) Frances (Martin),brothers Hugh, Eugene, Rev Brendan and Gerard, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, extended family, neighbours. many friends and by all who knew and loved Sean. May Sean’s gentle soul Rest In Peace.
Slán le Seán
Is le briseadh croí a fhágaimid slán len ár gcara buan Seán MacThaidhg a d’oibrigh go dícheallach ar son Club na Botha agus ar son Chumann Lúthchleas Gaeil i gcoitinne, ar fud na tire agus thar lear. B’eisean an chéad fhear ó Chontae Mhuineacháin a toghadh mar Uachtarán ar an gcumann. Bhí sé ina uachtarán ón bhliain 2000 go dtí 2003.
Bhí Seán Mac Thaidhg lárnach do fhorbairt Pháirc an Chrócaigh nuair a bhí athnuachan á dhéanamh ar fód na páirce agus ar an staid. In éineacht leis an gcoiste forbartha d’éirigh leo an clár oibre a bhí leaghtha amach acu a chríochnú.
Chaith Seán a shaol ag cur cúrsaí Chlub na Botha chun cinn. Bhí sé ina imreoir peile agus é ina dhéagóir. Ach bhí air éirí as de bharr gortú fad-théarmach. Dhírigh sé ar bhainistíocht foirne agus b’eisean an bainisteoir nuair a bhuaigh foireann na Botha Craobh Peil Sinsir Mhuineacháin i 1974-an chéad bua craoibhe ó 1961. I 1977 bhí sé ina bhainisteoir ar fhoireann peil sinsir an chontae agus san ré órga ó 1979 go 1988, nuair a bhuaigh siad Craobh Peil Sinsir Uladh trí uair. Ní dhéanfar dearmad go deo ar 1985 nuair a bhuaigh Muineachán an Comórtas Sraith Peile agus an cluiche ceannais in aghaidh Ard Mhacha. Níor bhuaidh Muineachán an sraith roimhe sin nó ó shoin. Níos déanaí, i samhradh 1985, chríochnaigh siad ar chomh-scór le Ciarraí i gcluiche leath-ceannais na craoibhe.
Seachas bheith ina réiteoir ó am go h-am, bhí Seán ina chúntóir le Eoghan Mag Aodha nuair a bhí na cluichí idirnáisiúnta á imirt in aghaidh na h-Astráile i 1987 agus 1990.
Bhí Seán, ar feadh na blianta, ina rúnaí ar Bhord Chontae Mhuineacháin agus ina theachta chuig Chomhairle Uladh agus bhí cúraimí thar an ghnách aige freisin nuair a bhí Peadar Ó Cuinn ina uachtarán.
Maidir le cúrsaí Club na Botha ba é Seán MacThaidhg an treoraí nuair a bhí na forbairtí móra ar siúl ins na h-ochtódaí agus na nóchadaí, nuair a bhí an Spórtlann á thógaint agus seilbh á nglacadh ar an bpáirc nua i gCoill Mhór.
Bhí Seán ina iar-phríomhoide ar Scoil Náisiúnta Iorball Sionnaigh agus Bunscoil na mBuachaillí i Muineachán. Rinne sé a dhícheall ar son na bpáistí agus ar son an phobail pé áit in ar oibrigh sé, agus ní dhéanfar dearmad go deo ar sin. Méala mór é don phobal i gcoitinne agus go h-áirithe dona chlann bás Sheáin. Go ndéana Dia trócaire ar a anam.
Gabhaimid comhbhrón le Bernie bean chéile Sheáin agus a iníonacha:
Paula ( NicConaill), Nuala (Nic Gabhann), Freda, Marta (NicCinna) agus Emma (Ní Fhlannagáin);
Lena dheartháireacha agus a dheirfiúracha Aodh, Máiréad (Ní Mhongáin), Eoghan, an t-Athair Breandán, Róis Máire (Ní Mhaonghile ), Gearóid, Proinnsias (Ní Mháirtín) agus a gcéilí.
Comhbhrón freisin leis na gar-pháistí Cian, Tiarnán, Éadaoin, Aoife, Iarlaith, Briana, Trea, Seán, Aifric, Diarmuid, Conchúr agus Neasa.
Thanks to our members and volunteers for their help
Well done to everyone involved from our club in the assistance to the McCague family in Seán’s funeral arrangements over the course of Friday and Saturday last.

We fondly remember fundraising projects in the past, such as the Scotstown Carnival in the 1960s to the purchase of our main field at Urbleshanny,
The Lord Mayor Campaign in the 1980s to fund the building of Sportlann Mhuire (the complex) and development of St. Marys Park and indeed, the ambitious purchase Of Kilmore in 1995 which has contributed to the outstanding success we achieve today.
Cairde na Botha is your opportunity to help your club continue this successful development for this generation and the next into the future. Fully paid up Members of Cairde Na Botha will have the benefit of their name engraved on the supporters’ wall at the Kilmore training grounds.

Health and Wellbeing
With the clock gone back an hour and the dark evenings and winter setting in, this is the time of year for the “Make your Céili” community initiative which combats loneliness and rural isolation. This has been a successful initiative aimed at encouraging people to visit a neighbour who may be lonely or suffering from rural isolation. So please over the next few months call in on people who may be suffering from loneliness, and please keep in mind the ongoing Covid 19 pandemic and take the necessary precautions. For those who are still nervous of physical visits given the ongoing Pandemic, we can still make contact with those we care about and / or are cocooning, living alone or vulnerable. They would really appreciate a phone call, letter or card just to say "I'm thinking about you, keep safe and stay strong." So please, Make a Ceili, Phone a Ceili, write a Letter, send a Card and keep in touch over the winter months and we are always here to help in anyway.
