We recently had a registration, information and donation night in the Scotstown GAA Social Club in the Complex. Many thanks to all those involved. The aim of Cairde Na Botha is to improve and develop our Kilmore training facilities to help achieve our vision of continuously improving our success on-field for our teams and off-field for our community. The Lord Mayor Campaign in the 1980s to fund the building of Sportlann Mhuire (the complex) and development of St. Marys Park and indeed, the ambitious purchase Of Kilmore in 1995 which has contributed to the outstanding success we achieve today.

Ulster Minor Club Football Championship
The Scotstown Minors play Donaghmore GAA on Saturday 17th December at 5pm in Colaiste Feirste. The tournament is organised and hosted by St. Paul's GAC, Belfast. The County Minor club championships were held in each of the nine counties of Ulster. The nine county champions contest the Ulster Club Championship. Scotstown U17 team won the Monaghan GAA U17 Division 1 Club Championship and qualified for this tournament. All matches are knock-out. Scotstown have been drawn in the quarter final against Donaghmore GAA from County Tyrone. Full draw; Preliminary: Fermanagh (yet to be decided) v Four Masters, Donegal; Quarter Final 1: Burren, Down v St. Brigid’s, Antrim; Quarter Final 2: Ramor United, Cavan v St Canice, Dungiven, Derry; Quarter Final 3: Scotstown GAA v Donaghmore, Tyrone; Quarter Final 4: Clan na Gael, Armagh v winners of Preliminary Round. Scotstown GAA Online Club Lotto – Jackpot €3,400!!

Scotstown GAA Annual General Meeting
The Annual General Meeting of Scotstown GAA took place on Friday last, December 2nd in the Complex. The minutes of last year’s minutes was read before a comprehensive report by the Youth Officer Cian Mohan was given detailing the activities of all the juvenile boys’ and girls’ teams. This was another hugely successful year for the juveniles culminating in an exceptional 11 trophy successes during 2022, including the U14 Girls Double Double, U18 Division 2 Championship, U17 Boys double double, the U13 Division 1 championship and the Under 15 Division 5 league cup shield. Cian thanked all those involved in facilitating this successful year.
Our Cultural Officer, Paddy Sherlock, reflected over another busy and successful year for the club in Cultural activities. the Scór na nog competitions in March, April and May, our Scor na Og quiz team won the county and Ulster championship and represented Monaghan in the All Ireland Finals. Our Scor na Og novelty act 2022 acornlife won the county championship. In September and October we had Scór Sinsir County and Ulster Competitions. Paddy Sherlock won the Scór recitation county final. The Novelty act crew finished a strong second and the rest of our representatives in singing, and solo singing finished strongly as well with superb performances. Well done to our Tráth Na gCeist 22 team, Colm and Martha Mc Kenna Shane Feeny and Damian Mohen, who finished 3rd, just narrowly after Latton and Monaghan Harps who finished level and had to go to a tiebreak. Well done to all our representatives this year. Paddy also thanked Pauline Rooney for her weekly Irish classes in the complex. Paddy also thanked other club officials and everyone else in the club for their assistance.
Our Secretary, Sean McGovern, detailed an extensive outline of the football review of 2022, mainly the adult teams. This was also a brilliant year for the adults with the ladies playing at Senior level for the first time in 20 years and won several key games to secure top flight football in 2023. The Senior Men won their 25th senior football league title and qualified for their 10th senior football championship final in a row but lost to Ballybay in the final. Sean thanked the management team who stepped down and welcomed in our new senior football manager David McCague and his management team. The Junior team had a successful year making great progress and qualifying for the quarter finals in the Junior league and the semi final in the Junior Championship. The senior reserves also had success clinching the O’Duffy cup and the Junior Reserves won the League Cup shield. Sean thanked everyone involved in the successful 2022 season. After 6 years as our secretary Sean is stepping down from his position. We thank Sean for all his hard and diligent work and for advancing the club forward through a successful period in the club’s history.
A report by our Health and Wellbeing officer, Bernie Sherry, detailed a busy year for the club in helping the community during the ongoing pandemic. The club achieved the Healthy Club position which aims to help GAA clubs explore how they support the holistic health of their members and the communities they serve. The Make a Ceili initiative is back this Winter and she urged club members to get involved. Many events happened over the year including; Operation Transformation 2022 Ireland Lights Up Walk at Kilmore; Information Session on Resilience by Miffy Hoad; Match Day Health Check at home league game against Truagh; and awarded the Covid Volunteer Award. Bernie thanked the club and those involved in assisting the health and wellbeing throughout the past year, including the communications of the community activities and the games and also Alice Daly from Tydavnet News for linking into the dissemination of community events from the club.
Our Treasurer, Aine McKenna discussed the Financial Statements and a review of the 2021 / 2022 financial year. Despite the pandemic, 2022 was a busy year for the club as the Kilmore development commenced and required a considerable level of funding for its completion, which is estimated in the new year. The day to day running of the club has been continually supported by the Ciste, Lotto, match receipts and our sponsors, while the capital investment for the year and future is supported by the Cairde na Botha and grant income. Aine praised all those involved in raising the funds for the club as this is crucial in continuing the success of the club for future generations.
Next was our Chairman Shane Stirrat’s address. Shane gave his condolences to the McCague family on the sad passing of Seán. Shane praised all our club members, players and volunteers for their hard work during the past year. Shane thanked all the 2022 committees, and the stewards, ground staff, Ciste and lotto groups, Cairde and the fundraising committees, the club shop and tuck shop, the cleaners, those who put up the bunting, the coaches, team managers and everyone else behind the scenes that make the club work so well and efficiently. He thanked those who have stepped back from the committee in the past year for all their work and efforts including Sean McGovern who he praised for this outstanding work for the past 6 years as Secretary. He praised those involved in the development of the club, creating a roadmap for the Kilmore development and all those involved in putting us in a strong financial position with successful events including the recent Cairde initiative.
Next was the election of officers. The election of officers was not necessary, as none of the officer roles were contested on the night. A letter of thanks from the McCague family for gratitude and appreciation for all the members and volunteers from Scotstown GAA who helped out in the funeral arrangements for the late Seán McCague.

After 6 years as secretary of our club, Sean McGovern is stepping down. During that time the club has progressed impressively with both on-field successes, in adult and juvenile, and off-field with initiatives such as the new Kilmore development. Such progression brought significant demands to a secretary, but Sean managed his role in a highly professional, dignified and resourceful manner throughout this time, and was always available when need be. We wish Sean all the best in his bright future and in his new role with our club as assistant secretary non football.

Scotstown Ladies Shoe Box Appeal
A big thank you to our Senior Ladies who kindly donated and dedicated their time yesterday evening, and prepared 37 Christmas shoe boxes, in the Shoe Box Appeal for Christmas.
They welcomed Diana from Feed Our Homeless who will help distribute these boxes to those in need this Christmas. Somethings as small as hats, gloves and socks can be extremely meaningful to someone who unfortunately may not have the comfort of a warm home. A massive well done to everyone involved in their efforts, donations, gifts etc. in the shoebox appeal with 37 boxes wrapped & some extra bits were donated (ran out of boxes!).
What a wonderful and kind initiative the Scotstown Ladies have done for those in need. Edel & Diana who run the shoebox want to say a massive thank you to everyone & that the shoeboxes will be delivered to the homeless over the last weekend. Feed our Homeless will give us a shout out when they are delivered. Thanks again to our Ladies team and to Murray Excel Ltd. for donated items for the boxes.
David McCague is appointed our new Seniors Manager
We are delighted to announce David McCague as the new Scotstown Senior team manager. David was part of the Monaghan Minors management that won the Ulster title in 2018 and later served as coach with the County seniors. A former player for Scotstown, David brings a wealth of experience for the management role. We are also delighted to announce and welcome former player and Scotstown and County legend Fergus Caulfield, and Peter Donnolly as part of the management team and we are delighted that Diarmuid Scullion remains on the management team. All the best to the new management team and our Senior Blues in the years ahead.
Our thanks to Kevin Boylan
Kevin Boylan has stepped down from our Seniors management team. Kevin was part of the management team under Colin McAree from 2022 to October last. During that time the Senior Football team regained the Monaghan Senior Club Football Championship in 2020 and in 2021 club to retain the Mick Duffy cup securing the 21st County Championship win for our club. Also in 2021 Scotstown won the league and championship cup double for the first time since 2015, when we won the Owen Ward cup. This year the team achieved an incredible 10th final in the row but lost to a strong Ballybay side but managed to win the Senior League and retain the Owen Ward trophy. We would like to thank Kevin for all his hard work, diligence and dedication to our club and for being a considerable part of the club’s success. We hope he can enjoy the senior team play in relatively more relaxed circumstances in the future!

Health and Wellbeing
With the clock gone back an hour and the dark evenings and winter setting in, this is the time of year for the “Make your Céili” community initiative which combats loneliness and rural isolation. This has been a successful initiative aimed at encouraging people to visit a neighbour who may be lonely or suffering from rural isolation. So please over the next few months call in on people who may be suffering from loneliness, and please keep in mind the ongoing Covid 19 pandemic and take the necessary precautions. For those who are still nervous of physical visits given the ongoing Pandemic, we can still make contact with those we care about and / or are cocooning, living alone or vulnerable. They would really appreciate a phone call, letter or card just to say "I'm thinking about you, keep safe and stay strong." So please, Make a Ceili, Phone a Ceili, write a Letter, send a Card and keep in touch over the winter months and we are always here to help in anyway.

Membership 2025 – Open for payment on Clubspot You can register for 2025 Membership on our Clubspot app. Please go to Menu, select Memberships, Buy Membership and select your appropriate option. Please note players must be registered before they start training. Any teams who have started group trainings should register asap. You can also pay your membership through a club officer. Health and Wellbeing Scotstown GAA will continue in 2025 with its Healthy Club project which aims to help GAA clubs explore how they support the holistic health of their members and the communities they serve. During 2024 we continued the Make a Ceili initiative which was launched before Christmas. In January / February saw the start of the Operation Transformation walk, the Scotstown Ladies hosted a Women’s Health talk, a drugs and Alcohol awareness workshop with our coaches, and we had several card nights during the first quarter. During May we had the Hello How are you? Campaign and in August, a community event after the Blessing of the Graves. In November we had daffodil planting in Kilmore and in November we had the return of the card nights for the winter. In January / February we had a charity fun / walk which took place on St. Brigid’s weekend. Please donate to the Dillon Quirke Foundation On the St. Brigid’s Bank holiday Monday last, Scotstown GAA Health and Wellbeing committee organised a Charity Fun Run / Walk in aid of the Dillon Quirke foundation. Thanks to all our bakers, supporters, volunteers on the day and whoever else contributed to make the event welcoming and successful. The event was run to raise money for the Dillion Quirke foundation. This foundation provided heart screening for over 90 pre teens and teens last year from 12-18 year olds within the club. During 2024 we continued the Make a Ceili initiative which was launched before Christmas. In January / February saw the start of the Operation Transformation walk, the Scotstown Ladies hosted a Women’s Health talk, a drugs and Alcohol awareness workshop with our coaches, and we had several card nights during the first quarter. During May we had the Hello How are you? Campaign and in August, a community event after the Blessing of the Graves. In November we had daffodil planting in Kilmore and in November we had the return of the card nights for the winter. In January / February we had a charity fun / walk which took place on St. Brigid’s weekend. As Mackie Rooney launched his book, a huge crowd gathered to celebrate this special occasion. Mackie shared some of the captivating stories behind his work, keeping the audience entertained throughout. Gaeltacht Scholarships 2025 Monaghan County Council will offer 36 part scholarships for second-level students to attend Irish Colleges in summer 2025. Sponsored by Monaghan County Council and: Gael Linn Coláiste Bun an Inbhir Coláiste na nOileán Coláiste Bhríde, Rann na Feirste Coláiste Sheosaimh An additional 4 scholarships (€100) will be awarded to students attending 'Other Colleges' not listed on the form. PLEASE NOTE: Applications are only accepted from students with a confirmed booking / on a waiting list.
